WHAT I'M EATING: BOOZY SNOOZY LUNCH AT BLYTHSWOOD SQUARE HOTEL, GLASGOW

image

Last week I visited the restaurant at Glasgow’s 5-star luxury Blythswood Square Hotel for their Boozy Snoozy lunch deal. For the fabulous price of £22 each (£88 for 4), I enjoyed three courses, coffee and a shared bottle of Prosecco.

image

For the Boozy Snoozy lunch, you choose your courses from the restaurant’s Market Menu- an ever changing menu of seasonal modern British cuisine. For a starter, I chose the game terrine. It was presented beautifully and you could have as much bread as you wanted to accompany it; but unfortunately, it was too course for my taste and too strong in flavour, so I didn’t eat much of it.

image

By the time my main course of duck breast, chips and gravy came, I was glad of that fact, as the portion of chips (cooked in duck fat) was huge. The duck was succulent, and the gravy was full of flavour. This was one of the tastiest and most satisfying plates of food i’ve had in a long time, and was more than worth paying the £5 menu supplement for.

image

For dessert I chose the white chocolate creme brulee with cherry sorbet and mini chocolate brownie bites. I hate cherries, so left the sorbet; but the creme brulee was so perfectly sweet and creamy. It was served cold however, and I prefer my creme brulee’s to be a tad warm. I also had a taste of the pecan pie. It was very authentic, and tasted strongly of pecans throughout. The pie was served with salted caramel ice-cream (which of course I had some of) and that was homemade and delicious.

The other starter on my table was Salmon Gravalax; which I was assured was fresh and very enjoyable, and the other main course that was eaten was lamb in red wine jus with mashed potato. It was cooked just right (slightly pink) and was full of flavour.

I was stuffed full after this lunch, and thought it was excellent value. I was impressed by the attentive service, and how much time and thought the kitchen put into each plate and menu combination.

image

One of the best things about the fashion industry is that there is always a fabulous event to attend or follow on social media throughout the calendar year. From top runway shows, to trade shows and award ceremonies, 2014 is set to be a big year within this glamorous and creative industry that I love. With this in mind, here’s some of the top fashion events taking place this year that you shouldn’t miss:..

Milan Men’s Fashion WeekThis is perhaps the biggest event in men’s fashion. Collections by renowned labels such as Prada, Ermanno Scervino and Giorgio Armani ensure that this is a fashion event not to be missed. If you hope to attend make your reservation at one of Milan’s top hotels early.

London Fashion WeekThis fashion extravaganza showcases some of the biggest names in the industry with an original and innovative flair. London’s Fashion Week is considered to be one of the “Big Four” boasting top designers such as Mulberry, Burberry and Tom Ford. This unforgettable fashion event in London is often broadcast live online.

New York Fashion WeekAnother of the “Big Four”, New York Fashion Week showcases some of the biggest names in the industry including Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui and Calvin Klein. The exclusive runway shows are visually stunning and attract many Hollywood stars and top photographers.

Bread and ButterHeld in the German capital Berlin, Bread and Butter showcases contemporary street style. This impressive trade show houses over six hundred brands including the likes of Diesel, Adidas and G-Star. The event is complimented by live concerts and art exhibitions.

WHAT MADE ME SMILE LAST WEEK #8

image

I can’t believe it is nearly March already. This year is going by quickly. Last week I discovered such a cute way to get new unique earrings when Molly Coddle’s Kitchen sent me some examples of their Stud Club parcels.

image

When you subscribe, you’ll get a little delivery every month of a couple of pairs of handmade studs with a little treat such as a sweet or sticker. It’s such a great way to expand your jewellery collection, and at just £22 for one year, it’s a bargain.

        image

I also listened to a great audiobook on Audible- Ali McNamara’s From Notting Hill With Love…Actually. I always listen to unabridged, so each book is about 10 hours long. I often prefer this for half an hour at night, compared to actually having a light on and physically reading. It also makes the story come alive more. This story is quirky and unique, and great for anyone who is a chick-lit fan. It’s about a young woman who is engaged but bored of her life because of all the movies she watches. The story follows her as she takes off for a month to prove she can live her life like those in a film.

WHAT TO WEAR ON A NIGHT OUT AT A CASINO

I’m so excited to be visiting The Corinthian this week, and i’m going to pay my first visit to the casino there. I have never been to a casino before; but I am partial to online casino games (naughty I know)- my favourite casino site is www.luckynuggetcasino.com as I can play that on my Android phone when out and about.

I’ve been trying to decide for a few days what to wear on my casino trip, as i’m pressuming (from movies) that I should dress up. I know in places like Las Vegas, people just go in their standard holiday clothes of t-shirts or novelty hen-night attire; but I don’t think that will cut it here, as most casinos in Europe are quite glamourous. Therefore, having narrowed it down to evening wear, I thought i’d write this post to help give me some more ideas. It did, and i’ve come up with a great outfit.

image

I think Lulu Guinness’ 50:50 Fifi Clutch (£295) is perfect for a casino visit. If only the odds were that good in the games! I also love the Hollywood glamour of this Stacie sequin dress from Coast (£350), and its red tones mean it will go perfectly with these red Britton heels from Kurt Geiger (£250). This dress is definitely a show-stopper.

I think it is important to look smart and well-presented when visiting an actual casino, as your blackjack skills will be taken more seriously and you will look like you know what you are doing. This is very un-nerving for the competition; where as my usual unseen pyjamas when i’m playing on my phone are not. As for my husband, he’ll be making his casino debut in a smart black suit- I think that a suit is essential for men in this environment as anything else just looks sloppy.

I wonder if i’ll win anything? Who am I kidding! It’ll be extremely fun though…

MY TOP 5 US-BRAND LIPCOLOURS

image

I have rather a large lipstick collection, so I thought i’d share with you my top five lipcolours from US brands.

Buxom Full Bodied Lipstick in Menace, $21.00, Sephora

image

This rich wine shade is packed with pigment and it applies smoothly due to its ultra-creamy formula. It plumps my lips without the ‘nippy’ feeling, and the colour lasts all day.

Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in Backstage Bambi, $19.00, Sephora

         image

This matte liquid lipstick just doesn’t budge once it’s on, and has such a strong hot pink colour. It’s not one for when your lips are dry though.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF15 in Rose, $22.50, Sephora

image

This sheer berry rose tinted treatment protects your lips from UV rays. It smells of lime, and blends reparative oils (such as blackcurrant) and waxes with real sugar to soften and shield.

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Luster in Glitzy, $24.00, Sephora

image

This has a delicious peppermint scent, and is a pretty natural antique pink lip tint with a touch of shimmer. It has been proven to increase moisture by 6000%. I love it for a flush of colour and ultimate hydration.

Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Toast, $24.00, Sephora

image

We all love Nars’ matte lip pencils and this is a great alternative. It’s a gorgeous highly pigmented matte lipstick that also has anti-aging benefits

I picked these up in a Sephora store; but if you are in the UK like me and not planning any trips, check out Ebay, Amazon and Rose’s Beauty Store to see if you can pick these up at reasonable prices.

FASHION NEWS FRIDAY #7

Paris Fashion Week To Showcase Three Designer Toyota Yaris Hybrid Cars (Luxury Launches) - Yes fashion lovers, you can now match your car to your clothes. I wouldn’t recommend it though- the safety of blending in looks dubious. Some French fashion designers have put their prints on these cars, and they’ll be sure to turn heads if nothing else.

Ten Things We Loved About London Fashion Week (Vogue) - Stella McCartney’s husband Alasdhair Willis’ first show for Hunter was visually stunning, and a must-see if you missed it.

Mulberry Launches Cara Delevingne Bag Range (Business Of Fashion) - After its collaboration with Lana del Ray in 2012, it’s Cara Delevingne’s turn. She’s no stranger to Mulberry, having fronted two campaigns, and I think her cool ‘It Girl’ status will bring the young generation back to this brand and help their declining sales.

WHAT MADE ME SMILE LAST WEEK #7

Last week I paid a visit to the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards’ 2013 Salon of the Year, Natural You Beauty in East Kilbride. They were having an event to showcase their offerings, and I had a great CND Shellac manicure (£28). I chose pretty nude shade Bare Chemise. I love nude polishes as they lengthen my fingers and go with every look. I’ve been helping to maintain the longevity by applying CND’s Solar Oil (£4) every morning and night. The therapists here are great and will give you lots of nailcare tips if you wish to book yourself in. I’m going back next month for a facial, so i’ll let you know how that goes.

I also went for a family lunch at Blythswood Square Hotel using the voucher for a Snoozy Boozy Lunch For 4 that I won at the Scottish Blogger’s Christmas party. I’ll be doing a full review soon; but the white chocolate creme brulee was too good not to mention here.

I’ve also been really getting into Pinterest even more than usual this week- particularly pinning ideas for my 30th birthday cake for May. You can follow me here, and join me in sharing beautiful images.

WIN £1MILLION WITH WALKERS CRISPS DO US A FLAVOUR CAMPAIGN

This is a sponsored post by Walkers Crisps; but all opinions are my own.

I wanted to bring you the news of this competition as it’s not often that having a crisp obsession (like I do) can help you become a millionaire.

Walkers are on the hunt for a new innovative flavour. If your idea is chosen by the judging panel of comedian David Walliams and chef Marco Pierre White and the public, you can start planning the interiors of your mansion.

I, of course, just had to enter. I think my idea of Lobster Ravioli is rather good. The flavour combination within would be lobster, butter, Dorset sour cream, dill and black pepper to create a luxurious and creamy taste. The lobster wouldn’t be as overpowering as Walker’s existing prawn flavour, and the pepper and dill would appeal to those who prefer sharper savoury tastes over the sweetness of Walkers’ more tomato based Prawn Cocktail variety.

No more waiting around- watch the instruction video, put your taste-buds in gear and get entering. I can’t wait to see some of the ideas, and will be keeping an eye on the Twitter hashtag #FlavourMillionaire. Good luck!

NYFW Trend Alert: Shearling (In Style) - We’re going to be warm and woolly this Fall.

Alice + Olivia’s Well-dressed Fairytale (Marie Claire) - I love this collection that resembles a 1970s telling of Snow White.

FLETCHER'S COTTAGE SPA AT ARCHERFIELD HOUSE IN EAST LOTHIAN

Last week I spent an evening in the most beautiful and relaxing spa I have ever been to, and given my profession, I have been to rather a lot.

From the moment I entered, I was immediately ‘hugged’ by the warmth of their log cabin style decor and the scent from the dozens of lit candles. Exposed wood, ‘fur’ rugs and comfy armchairs filled the foyer, and made me instantly relax. I was greeted by one of the receptionists who brought my husband and I their health form to complete and a smoothie and hot cloth. We had to remove our shoes here and change into their slippers before entering the spa.

Our first sight was the stunning relaxation room full of twinkling candles, fireplaces, rustic wood and a huge floor to ceiling window that looked out over the walled garden. The lighting was dim, and the room was the sort of place you could easily fall asleep in. You are encouraged to spend the whole day here in your robe and slippers- with complimentary sherry and iced water, plus the ability to order hot drinks and scones for an extra charge.

We were guided to the individual private changing rooms that all contain a shower, toilet, basin with Aromatherapy Associates face cleansing products, fresh towels and a fresh dressing gown. When you are changed, you just pop all your belongings into the locker outside, and head back to the relaxation room to wait for your therapist.

I had the Spiezia Open Your Eyes treatment (£50 for 30 minutes), and my husband had the Spiezia Back To Life treatment (£50 for 30 minutes). The treatment rooms are just as stunning as the rest of the property, and the temperature can be adjusted to just how you want it via air conditioning and heated beds. Before your treatment begins, your therapist will go through the stages of it with you (so it can be tailored to your needs) whilst your feet are bathed. The Spiezia Open Your Eyes treatment uses organic Spiezia products and includes a facial that focuses on the eye area to hydrate, awaken and tackle signs of aging. My skin felt thoroughly cleansed afterwards and it seemed much longer than just 30 minutes. My husband’s Spiezia Back To Life involved a back exfoliation and then moisturising treatment using Spiezia products; before a relaxing massage with Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel.

You are then returned to the relaxation room where you receive a fruit and nuts platter and are left free to enjoy the rest of your time at the spa- further relaxing and reading magazines, or visiting the lavender aromatherapy sauna or salt steam room. I am definitely going to head back again to Fletcher’s Cottage Spa to have a manicure, as the nail room is so pretty.

LINKS I LOVE WEDNESDAY #6

This didn’t publish last night, so i’m afraid you are getting ‘Links I Love Wednesday’ on a Thursday this week. It’s mostly about fashion week, with a little social media thrown in. I hope you enjoy what i’ve loved to read online during the past few days…

Virgin Atlantic Using Google Glass - I’m excited to see how we utilise the technology of Google Glass in the near future, and am interested in the results of this trial by airline Virgin Atlantic in improving their service to First Class passengers with it.

A Day In The Life Of A Fashion Week Model - This is great peek behind the scenes of New York Fashion Week via model Fei Fei Sun’s photo diary.

10 Things We’re Looking Forward To During London Fashion Week - If you’re not glued to every piece of LFW action, at least make sure you pay attention to these bits.

19 Awkward Fashion Week Front Row Moments - Did you catch sight of these humorous FROW poses?

Twitter Testing Major Profile Redesign - This looks suspiciously like Facebook, and i’m not liking it. You do, however, need to check it out.

INTRODUCING RE:ADORE, THE NEW HOME OF ONLINE CLOTHES SWAPPING

This is a sponsored post by Re:Adore; but all opinions are my own.

Re:Adore is a brand new Android app and website that allows fashion lovers to buy, sell and swap their unwanted clothing and accessories. Listing an item to swap is completely free, and the commission for selling is only £1. Why not stick up some of your fashion finds that no longer fit, and see if you can swap them for new discoveries? You’ve got nothing to lose.

We all love trawling vintage stores and markets, and Re:Adore allows you to do it from the comfort of your own home. I think it’s a great start-up (with a great name) that needs our support to get it off the ground.

Some alarming stats from USAgain:

13.1 million tonnes of textiles are binned each year, and only 15% (2 million tonnes) are recovered for reuse or recycling.

The average t-shirt wastes 700 gallons of water during manufacturing. That’s 140 water cooler tanks worth.

Let’s start an online clothes recycling revolution- download the app from the Google Play store now, or visit re-adore.com

WHAT MADE ME SMILE LAST WEEK #6

image

I was away on a press trip most of last week in Edinburgh and Lothians for my digital magazine Twinkle Style & Travel Magazine. I ate great food, stayed in great places and had some spa pampering. Subscribe to the magazine for the upcoming reviews of my time away. I couldn’t not share a little sneak peak with you here though.

I also discovered a great singer last week on YouTube. I was watching one of Fleur de Force’s vlogs and she used this brilliant track called Icing by Charity Vance in the background. I’ve popped the actual music video above so you can check her out. She wrote this song in her 10th grade English class about her best friend. I can’t believe i’ve only just come across her now.

It was my husband’s birthday last week too, so I ate lots of nice things; but still managed to loose 1lb. The 5:2 diet rocks!

IN LOVE WITH: ST. ENOCH CENTRE GLASGOW LATE TRADING

The St. Enoch Centre shopping mall in Glasgow has said goodbye to the late-night shopping Thursdays of the past. Now shoppers can visit its stores until 7pm Monday to Friday; meaning the people of Glasgow no longer have an excuse not to make an effort for that last minute after-work drinks date.

image

Last week, the St. Enoch Centre invited me to test out how easy it is to find the perfect outfit for a date at the last minute. At 6pm I hit the shops, and managed to pull a great outfit in less than an hour. Luckily the sales were still on, so I managed to grab some bargains.

image

Debenhams (with its vast array of high street concessions, such as Miss Selfridge and Oasis) was my first stop; but I couldn’t find anything I liked in the style I wanted- pretty but cool, with a bit of an edge. I’m rather particular. So, I headed to Dorothy Perkins and immediately spotted this blue and white stripped dress from their SS14 collections. Its jersey material had just the right laid back vibe, and the leather-effect pockets and trim added some edge to the look.

image

Leather was now going to be a running theme, and I found this great quality orange clutch with gold accents to add a pop of colour to my outfit (also from Dorothy Perkins).

image

Next, I went to have a peek in Topshop to see if I could find some shoes and jewellery. These peep-toe shoe boots were a great bargain in the sale, and their metallic heels went well with the gold studded sections on my clutch bag for a bit of a rock-chick vibe.

image

No rock-chick is complete without chains, so I picked up this gorgeous metallic and black statement one in Topshop too.

image

I still had some money and some time left, so I popped back to Dorothy Perkins and added a final piece to my outfit- a cute white leather and gold chain bracelet that went so well with everything I had already bought.

I love black and blue together, and can’t stand the silly ‘rule’ of not wearing them alongside each other. I think my choices would show confidence on a date, along with style and a love of accessorising.

St.Enoch Centre is now open until 7pm Monday to Friday with free parking 5-7pm until 14th February.

BEAUTY REVIEW: LANVIN ME FRAGRANCE

First of all, this bottle is stunning. It’s very self-indulgent and glamorous with an edge- very much like the scent itself; which is sweet and floral with the twist of liquorice.

Rose and Sandalwood are at the heart of the scent, along with strong notes of blueberry and liquorice. I also picked up mandarin almost immediately. I can imagine it would be too ‘sickly’ for those who like light fragrances; but fans of Diesel’s Loverdose and Lolita Lempika’s Lolita Lempicka will love it.

Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz describes the ME woman as “an individual, which doesn’t mean an individualist or a narcissist. No, she is an individual because she also thinks about herself. She pays attention to what she is or what she wears, rather than trying to position herself with respect to others. Since ME is a gift perfume, the ME woman likes to give it to herself”.

Lanvin’s ME 30ml is available for £33 from Harvey Nichols

WHAT MADE ME SMILE LAST WEEK #5

Last week was a busy one- I had several events to attend, and a fashion collaboration with Glasgow’s St.Enoch Centre to take part in.

image

On Wednesday, I went to the Rainbow Room International hair and beauty salon in Royal Exchange Square for an event, and had a pretty Jessica file and polish that is still going strong now. Having nice colours on my nails always cheers me up. A Jessica File & Polish treatment costs £26, if you fancy having one yourself. The manicurists here are great, and the polishes are such high-quality. I think I may have discovered my new favourite top coat too.

image

On Saturday, on the train to Edinburgh, I realised I had left my purse at home. I was stranded with no cash or cards and a train fare that needed to be paid. Luckily, I had a brilliant and friendly conductor (and not one of the usual ‘job-worths’) who helped me sort it out. I also had lots of offers of help on Twitter which helped restore my faith in people. Luckily I managed to successfully have my day in Edinburgh thanks to RBS Emergency Cash (which prior to this disaster, I was completely oblivious to). This service is genius, and all banks should offer it.

I’ve been really getting into wax melts recently, as the scent throw can be a lot more powerful than scented candles. Flamingo Candles’ Strawberry & Champagne melt smells good enough to eat, and really makes a whole room smell ‘yummy’. They are much cheaper than candles too, which allows you to try lots more varieties.
