I’ve been testing out a couple of face masks from Superdrug’s Optimum skincare range – the Phyto Calm Midnight Moisture Mask and the Phyto Energise 3-in-1 Moisture Balm, Primer & Mask. This range from Superdrug is an affordable, high-street way to give your skin the treat of scientifically-crafted products with great ingredients. The Phyto Calm Midnight Moisture Mask* (£9.99 from Superdrug) is a thik, but non-greasy cream that’s designed to calm stressed skin and give skin a burst of moisture overnight. This is such a nice mask for the current heatwave we are having. If your skin is going to be out in the sun, pop this mask in the fridge, then apply a generous layer when you get into bed at night. It has a gentle, fresh scent.
The key ingredients in this mask are Mirablis Jalapa & Caffeine – a plant cell complex that aids night-time skin recovery, so that your skin wakes up with a brighter and more energised appearance. There’s also Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate and plump the skin. There are better overnight recovery masks out there – e.g. Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – but they are at least double the price. This is an effective high street alternative.
The other mask, the Superdrug Optimum 3-in-1 Moisture is a great multi-tasking product to have around. It is a medium-consistency cream that really gives your skin a moisture boost. You can massage the product in to hydrate the skin and make a great plump, radiant and even base for makeup. Or, you can apply a thick layer for 5-10 minutes to quickly moisturise and energise the skin.
It contains, of course, that moisture-god Hyaluronic Acid, as well as illuminating pearl extracts to add radiance to the skin. There’s also Taurine, which is scientifically-proven to have an energising effect on the skin to make it look less tired. Taurine is also an antioxidant to help protect your skin from environmental damage, and it is also thought to help calm skin inflammation. The other key ingredient in this product is Creatine. Creatine is an organic acid that’s made up of three amino acids – L-Arginine, Glycine, and L-Methionine. Effectively, it supports the function of your cells e.g. helping to promote the synthesis of Collagen (which is a key buliding block of your skin that keeps it full, plump and youthful).
I like this product too – it’s great quality for the price if you are using it as a mask or moisture treatment; but if you plan to use it daily as a primer, you don’t get much, so it wouldn’t last you as long as you would expect a primer of that price to last you.
