Everyone is beautiful and amazing. If you find it hard to look in the mirror or take a compliment, you haven’t yet learnt that you look incredible because you don’t feel good inside. Self-love is so important for our self-esteem and mental health. Beauty is not about flawless skin or toned cheekbones, it’s a radiance that comes from within and a twinkle in the eye that comes from loving and accepting yourself. There are many ways that you can learn how to feel confident in your own beauty, and how to take care of your skin and your body so that you can be the best version of yourself.
Practising self-care
Self-care has become a real talking point over the last 12 months, and I think that all of us do more of it now that we used to. The primary aim of self-care is to look after yourself. It’s not selfish to put yourself first from time to time and to take steps to promote good health and wellbeing. It’s also about protecting yourself from risks or triggers that impact your physical or mental health. Simple things like getting into a routine in the evening so that you have time to relax and unwind before you go to bed; have a spa night; taking time out for hobbies and activities that lift your spirits; and eating well are all great examples of self-care. It’s also beneficial to learn to spot triggers for stress and anxiety, to understand when you need to take a break and to be kind to yourself. If you are feeling rested, calm and fulfilled, you are more likely to think more positively about yourself and feel more capable of striving and succeeding at work.
Looking after your skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body and it provides a vital protective barrier against the elements and other potential hazards and threats. Looking after it is important to protect it from the environment, the sun and the natural ageing process. Healthy, glowing skin can make us feel a million dollars, but it’s not always easy to achieve what you might perceive as an ‘Instagram-worthy’ complexion. You may suffer with acne, have a lot of acne scars, have an uneven skin tone or another skin condition such as excema. There is, however, no such thing as an ‘Instagram-worthy’ complexion. Some of the most popular and beautiful people on Instagram have all of these skin conditions and more. They are beautiful too and they all care for their skin to keep it looking as radiant and healthy as possible. Caring for your skin enhances your natural beauty and makes you feel much more confident, especially when you don’t have makeup on or you’re meeting people for the first time or after months of video calls and group chats. It’s not about a flawless complexion, it’s about following hydrating, brightening and rejuvenating skin care tips to get that beautiful glow from within and that juicy plumpness that comes from hydration. Focus on shielding your skin from the sun, staying hydrated and nourishing your complexion using targeted skin care products. It is never too early to start looking after your skin and lowering the risk of damage and premature ageing. The more you look after your skin, the more you’ll glow. If you don’t know where to start with a skincare regime, it’s beneficial to seek advice from beauty experts who are not pushing specific brands or promotions. Choose products that suit your skin type.
Moving your body
Exercise is often linked to physical health benefits, but it also plays an effective role in making you look and feel good. When your body is moving, it releases endorphins and the levels of serotonin and dopamine in your brain increase and makes you feel happier. I was skepical of this, but in 2021 i’ve really started exercising a few times per week and it really does give me a mega boost. It makes me feel strong and capable. Being more active can also help to reduce stress, elevate energy levels and help you gain confidence. It’s essential to note that you don’t have to become a gym bunny overnight to reap the rewards of regular exercise. A daily walk, a yoga session, a virtual personal training class, a bike ride or a dance around the kitchen will all do you the power of good. Try to incorporate exercise into your routine and switch things up to keep motivation levels high. There are all kinds of activities you can try and you can embrace both indoor and outdoor pursuits. It’s not to do with losing weight, it’s to do with making your body stronger and fitter, which will have a great impact on how you see yourself too.
We all have different perceptions of beauty and we have days when we feel anything but beautiful. If you’re struggling with a lack of confidence or you’d like to feel more positive when you look in the mirror in the morning, try these steps to replenish your inner self. Look after your body and mind, be kind to yourself and recognise that you are unique (that is always a strength).
