Scents are one of the most personal things for any human. We associate memories with a smell much more strongly than with any other sense. All it takes is one bad odour for people to instantly form a negative opinion about something. This is why you have to be very careful with the scents you decide to wear. Unfortunately, not enough people know how to pick the best fragrances for them. Others are too rigid and always stick to the same two or three scents when they could be much more versatile. Let’s take a look at some common mistakes people make when they buy a fragrance.
Not Understanding the Difference Between Fragrance Types
A lot of people believe that eau de parfum, perfume, and eau de toilette are roughly the same thing, but they are very different and they need to be used differently. Eau de toilette, for instance, is less concentrated than eau de parfum and is usually better for daytime. Perfume is the most concentrated type of fragrance, while eau de parfum sits somewhere in the middle. This makes eau de parfum the most versatile option for most people.
If you’re looking for great eau de parfums, where there is something for everyone, check out the selection of Byredo products at SSENSE. Not Understanding How Scents Develop
One of the biggest mistakes people make when buying a fragrance is judging the scent by the first impression. They will either use a sample or smell the fragrance immediately after applying it to their body. In reality, you can’t tell how good a fragrance smells until you’ve let some of the solvents evaporate. You also have to let it linger on you to know how it reacts to your chemistry.
Testing too Many Types in Rapid Succession
You have to take your time when trying different fragrances. Trying too many in succession will overwhelm your olfactory receptors and stop you from really appreciating the fragrance. This will sound strange, but I would recommend that you bring a small cup of coffee beans with you when you’re testing perfumes and smell them between each spritz. The coffee beans will reset your nose’s sensors and allow you to fully appreciate each fragrance.
Not Experimenting
It’s nice to have a couple of go-to scents in your collection, but you shouldn’t stick to a handful of fragrances. People are often scared to experiment with fragrances and are missing out on all the other options out there. The number of fragrances on the market is quasi-infinite, and if you like what you’re currently using, there’s a strong chance that there is a fragrance out there that blows it out of the water. Try as many as you can and build a collection that will allow you to express yourself and always have the perfect scent for different moods and occasions. I love a wide range of fragrances, but I know that any that are rose-based are likely to appeal to me.
You could even try scents such as pheromones, e.g. True Pheromones, dependant on what purpose you are wearing fragrance for.
Fragrances are one of the most difficult things to pick, but once you’ve found a few things that work, things become much easier. Avoid the few common mistakes people make and you should be able to find the perfect set of fragrances for yourself in no time.
