
Attending the gym can be intimidating, no matter your skill level or appearance. For those who want to start exercising in a gym, it can feel overwhelming and daunting when they first enter. Going to the gym can be an uncomfortable experience, with a high volume of women reporting to have felt uncomfortable at some point. Finding a gym that you feel comfortable visiting will help in your goal of attending regularly and completing your workouts to the best of your ability. There are ways to help yourself feel confident when attending the gym, and here are just some of them.
Wear Something Comfortable
If the concept of attending the gym makes you feel nervous, wear gym clothes that you feel comfortable and confident wearing. Whether that’s leggings that lift your bum, or ones that hold in your tummy. Wearing something that you feel comfortable in can help in reducing any nerves you are feeling when you might compare yourself to others. It can help you to feel invigorated to go to the gym. When you think you look good, you automatically feel more confident and less unsure.
Look into well-respected brands e.g. Gym King. They always have a diverse range of women’s co-ords that are practical for the gym and comfortable. Treat yourself to a new workout outfit or two. Having a few sets of women’s co-ords to wear provides you with different clothing choices. It allows you to mix and match depending on how you might feel that day. If you are into fashion, think of gym clothes as just being another outfit, and have fun shopping for colours and shapes that will suit you.
Find a Time and Have a Plan
Being in a crowded gym can put you off from attending. During peak times, you may find yourself waiting for equipment or machinery to become available. It’s during these stagnant periods that you start to compare yourself to others and think about what you look like to others. When planning a visit to the gym, consider visiting at an off-peak time. The quieter atmosphere can help you feel comfortable enough to do a workout without any negativity clouding your mind. The less people there are to compare yourself to, the better. Always remember though – nobody is looking at you and everyone is too caught up in their own thinking to even have an opinion on you.
After choosing a time and date, plan for your exercises and the machines you want to use. Having a plan in place means the only thing you need to worry about is completing the workout you have set. If the gym is busier than usual and the equipment or machine you want to use is occupied, you can complete another workout on your list whilst you wait. It reduces your chances of standing around and losing the motivation to continue your exercises.
Focus On Your Fitness Goals
Everyone within the gym will have their own goals they are trying to accomplish. People are focussed on themselves. Each individual will likely be at a different fitness level than the person standing next to them. Despite this, it can be easy to look at someone else and compare. It could be seeing how some individuals lift weights twice the amount you can or run on a treadmill at an extraordinary speed. Seeing others lifting heavier weights or running faster can be disheartening. However, remember that you are attending the gym for yourself. Everyone within the gym will have started from the same position as you. As you go in to complete the workout routine you have created, ensure that you remain focused on yourself and ticking off each step you had planned. Your reason for being in the gym is to accomplish your own fitness goals, not compare them to others fitness goals.
