They say that health is happiness – and while sometimes we may get sick through no fault of our own, there are certain steps we can follow to take control of our health. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, “60% of related factors to individual health and quality of life are correlated to lifestyle.”
With that in mind, here are three ways to put your health into your own hands.
Get more sleep
When we sleep, our body begins to heal and repair itself. As a result, not getting enough sleep can quickly take its toll on your health. For example, it could begin to weaken your immune system, meaning you’re more vulnerable to sickness. However, studies have also found that people who regularly get enough sleep are less likely to deal with high blood pressure and heart conditions.
As a result, you should always be on the lookout for ways to get more sleep. For example, you could make it easier for yourself to fall asleep each night by avoiding screens for an hour before bed. This gives you time to properly relax and switch off. You should also avoid drinking caffeinated beverages, like tea or coffee, in the evening, as they are stimulants that could keep you awake long into the night.
More generally, following a consistent sleep schedule should make it easier for you to get enough sleep, as it means your body will naturally begin to tire as your ‘bedtime’ approaches.
Get medical advice when you need it
According to a recent report, two-thirds of adults avoid going to the doctor, even when dealing with potentially troubling symptoms. While it’s natural to feel nervous about this kind of thing, the sooner you get help, the better. After all, this could mean that you catch a minor health problem before it has the chance to become a major issue.
As such, one of the easiest ways to put your health in your own hands is by seeking out medical advice when you need it. Visit your doctor, healthcare provider or local Women’s Health Clinic to get answers to any burning questions or for any necessary tests.
Go for a daily walk
Regular exercise is one of the best ways to take care of both your body and mind. After all, it can improve heart health, reduce stress and anxiety and strengthen your bones and muscles. However, it’s important to note that regular exercise does not mean you have to spend hours a day in the gym. You simply have to find an exercise routine that works for you.
Despite this, going for a daily walk is one of the best forms of exercise around. This is because it can improve your cardiovascular health while also helping you return to exercise after a period of inactivity. Beyond this, spending time outdoors is good for our mental health, too. As such, you should aim to go for at least one walk a day or set yourself daily step goals.
