But there’s actually quite a lot to be said for choosing the seaside for Christmas breaks. Not only are the streets and beaches much quieter during the winter, but there’s also a very unique charm to the invigorating salty air and the reflection of Christmas lights in the harbour waters.

It’s simply the perfect way to unwind during an often-hecticholiday season, even if you probably aren’t going to be taking a dip in the water or breaking out the towels for a spot of sunbathing.

Like so many other towns and villages up and down the UK, coastal destinations are going to be decked out in festive decorations come December. Better yet, seaside towns will often incorporate their harbours and piers in their Christmas lights, giving the stunning effect of an array of lights reflected in the calm waters.

And that’s not even to mention the local Christmas markets that many towns have to offer. Places like Whitby, St Ives and Brighton are all notable for their festive markets, and you might even get to hear some sea shanties mixed in with the Christmas carols!

As beautiful as the coast is during the summer, it’s just as stunning in the winter. While you don’t get the same colourful display of flowers that you do in the warmer months, the rugged coastlines and windswept beaches have an entirely different kind of beauty in the colder months of the year.
Make sure you wrap up in some warm layers before you head out to enjoy some winter coastal walks, as the winds can be searingly cold! But no matter the chill, you’ll find that the combination of dramatic skies, rolling waves and the solitude of the empty beaches makes for an incredible winter experience.
Delicious local food with a seasonal twist
When it comes to winter and Christmas foods you probably don’t consider seafood. But with the fresh catches you’ll find in seaside destinations around the UK there’s a strong case for adding some fish to your December menu.
