FOOTBALL FAN FASHION: HOW TO WEAR YOUR TEAM’S COLOURS OFF THE PITCH

Football shirts are an essential part of the matchday ritual. As you wander into the ground of any given team on matchday, you’re sure to see swathes of fans wearing shirts of bygone years, featuring celebrated names and numbers on their backs. This is a kind of uniform, and a way of binding everyone together behind a common cause. It’s part of the fun of the modern game, in other words.

But wearing a replica shirt just once or twice a week might strike you as somewhat wasteful. The right shirt can be a means of making a fashion statement, as well as signalling your allegiance to a particular club.

From the Stands to the Streets

The modern football shirt, much like the modern football player, is a fixture in pop culture outside of the ground. You’ll find many celebrities and influencers now wearing them, in a tradition whose roots stretch back to the 90s, or even earlier. This is a phenomenon known as ‘blokecore’, with obscure retro shirts lending particular prestige to the person wearing them. If you’re sporting the shirt of an Italian team from the 90s, then it’s natural that you’ll be regarded as a connoisseur of the sport.

    Styling Your Team’s Colours

So, how do you effortlessly wear your team’s colours? The answer is often a simple one: just throw on a pair of jeans and a jacket. Make sure that your colours are well-chosen and coordinated. Avoid the colours of rival teams. You can often elevate the outfit, and make yourself ready for winter, with the help of a few choice accessories. Branded scarves, hats, and jewellery are often available from the online stores of major clubs.

    Limited Editions and Collector’s Items

Certain kits have a unique appeal. These might have been worn by particular teams at important moments, or they might have been released by a club as a special limited-edition product. Match-worn kits might be of particular value to collectors, especially if they are signed – and these shirts are often auctioned off by clubs, in support of a favoured charity.

    Supporting Sustainability Through Football Fashion

One point in favour of second-hand football shirts is that they’re sustainable. More generally, if you’re willing to rotate your football shirts year after year, you might get the prestige that comes with wearing an older one. Who knows? The shirt you’re buying for this season might end up being a classic, decades down the line!
