As the days and nights are getting chillier than ever, it’s time to get cosy with beautiful, yet practical, knitwear. If knitwear makes you think of the chunky, scratchy jumpers your gran used to knit for you, then it’s time to discover what else is out there. These days, quality British brands like Celtic & Co are proving that knitwear can keep you warm and make a fashion statement. All whilst keeping sustainability at the forefront too.
As we head into next year, we’re set to see stylish knitwear that not only proves how elegant and versatile these items can be, but also how you can wear them all year round. It’s my favourite clothing category! Let’s take a look at the top knitwear trends for 2021 that will keep you snug without sacrificing your impeccable style.
Checkerboard Jumpers
One big trend we’re set to see in 2021 is for funky checkerboard prints. Checkerboard patterns have long been found in knitwear, but the difference this year is that you will find it sported in a range of different colours. These colourful jumpers are sure to lift your mood every time you wear them.
Knitted Dresses
If you love to flaunt your curves then knitwear dresses are perfect for you. These dresses are flattering on many body types and are a great way to smarten up knitwear. A jumper dress with a high neck will keep you warm in cold weather whilst also being stylish and fashionable. A great look for chilly days is a long knitted dress with knee-high boots.
Cardigans
Cardigans never go out of style and your winter wardrobe would be incomplete without at least one great one. A simple cardigan is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you’ll ever own: you can wear it to work, to a casual lunch, or just about anywhere. Most importantly, you can throw it over a floral dress on a summer evening, or layer it with bulkier items to keep you warm in the depths of winter. In 2021, we’ll see a trend for long cardigans, as well as a revival of the twinset, with matching knitted tops and cardigans.
Cropped Jumpers
Cropped jumpers will be very much on trend this year, reminding us that cropped items aren’t just for summer. This year you will find cropped sweaters in different colours and patterns, including big, bulky knits. These look great layered over jeans, dresses, or pencil skirts for a unique look that’s sure to turn heads.Sweater Vests
The sweater vest has been on-trend for the past few years and this year is no different. We’ve seen top designers like Dior and Gucci put sweater vests down the runway in their shows, and this is sure to be a stable of 2021. This year, we’ll likely see sweater vests layered it on top of a turtleneck for a chic and warm ensemble. Try them over a crisp white shirt too.
Puff Sleeves
Puff sleeves are going to be a big trend next year, and they’re even going to show up in our knitwear. Voluminous sleeves are a great way to add drama to any look, and this is particularly true when it comes to fine knits. You’ll look amazing in a knitted jumper or dress with puffed sleeves and they are real statement pieces.
Cutouts
Knitwear with cutouts is another big trend we’ll see this season. Cutouts have been in style the last couple of years, and now we’ll see this translate into cutout knitwear. This will manifest in knitted jumpers with cut-out shoulders and knitwear dresses with dramatic cut-out waists.
Sleeveless Knits
Who says you can’t wear sleeveless this season? We’ll see a lot of sleeveless knits in solid colors, as well as stripes and prints. Sleeveless knits with a high neckline look stunning layered over long-sleeved tops for winter, or can be worn on their own in autumn and spring.
Ponchos
Voluminous ponchos are very comfortable to wear in winter, not to mention keeping you toasty warm! Simply slide them over your head and the poncho will wrap comfortably over you with a flattering drape, while giving off luxurious vibes. This year the trend will be for ponchos with asymmetrical hemlines, embellishments such as buttons or zips, and in oversized shapes. This isn’t a look for larger body types like me as it makes you look even bigger.
Coordinates
The last knitwear trend we’re set to see in 2021 are outfits that coordinate from head to toe. Get ready for tops worn with matching trousers or dresses paired with matching woollen tights for a unique and dramatic look.
When shopping for clothes it’s important to think about practicality as well as style. Knitwear covers all the bases: it is warm, comfortable and stylish all at the same time! Above all, be sure to show off your own unique sense of style. Neutral colors have dominated the fashion shows of winter 2020/2021, but as i’ve shown, there’s plenty of trends to suit those who love a more colourful look.
